What if? So what! (17-20 December, Rotterdam)

Interdisciplinary approaches to counterfactual reasoning

17-20 December, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Counterfactual reasoning plays a pivotal role in our cognitive lives. It has been studied intensively by logicians, philosophers, psychologists and linguists. Unfortunately, however, scholars working in one of these domains have not always been sufficiently
informed about what was going on in the other domains and, as result, there has been too little interdisciplinary work on the subject. The purpose of this conference is to bring findings from logic, philosophy, psychology and linguistics
together and to explore their interdisciplinary ramifications.

Invited speakers:

D. Atkinson (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen)
S. Beck (University of Birmingham)
T. De Mey (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam)
J. Halpern (Cornell University)
D. Hilton (Universite de Toulouse II)
C. Hitchcock (California Institute of Technology)
H. Leitgeb (University of Bristol)
D.R. Mandel (University of Toronto)
F.A. Muller (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam)
S. Smets (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)

Call for papers:

Abstracts should be no longer than 1000 words. Abstracts received will be immediately acknowledged and authors will be informed on acceptance or rejection within ten days by email. Deadline for abstracts is 26 November 2007. Further information can be obtained by sending an email to whatifsowhatcongress@timdemey.be. Although the focus of the conference is on interdisciplinary work, like, e.g., the ramifications of the psychology of counterfactual reasoning for philosophical accounts of causal explanation (or vice versa), we obviously welcome 'disciplinary' contributions as well.
